Hoop addresses the question of marginalisation in contemporary culture – the process through which various groups are excluded within “ access to and participation in “ a dominant culture. The discourse juxtaposes various points of view relating to issues of gender, race, sexual preference, and class…. the major body of work explores fundamental issues raised whe nwe attempt to define concepts such as “mainstream” and”minority,” with an aim to open up new ways of thinking about culture and representation in our society.
The artworks were created with Lucille’s signature Photo-media and Textile processes using embroidery hoops and mirrors. Materials like the ‘Embroidery Hoop’ related to historical contexts of hand work in stitching and embroidery historically for women, in relation to women’s work while challenging the concepts of language and representation of women in society.
The exhibition and prior residency in Taos, USA coincided with the completion ofMartin’s Master of Arts Degree at University of NSW-COFA Sydney, The AustraliaCouncil International Studio in Tokyo, The Canon Artlab Residency in Tokyo,Hatched Post Grad program UNSW and The Western Australia Premiers FellowshipAward. The exhibition was inspired by Martin’s senior lecturer in Anthropology/Cultural Studies, Dr Diane Losche (Art Theory) – University of NSW /COFASydney M.Art program.
AGWA curators at the time, Margaret Moore and Paola Anselmi, purchased the major work ‘Between the Folds’ for the AGWA Collection. John Stringer purchasedSpiderweb and Telegraph Poles for The Kerry Stokes Collection which has been in three curatorial programs in Australia.
